RWA conference incites big dreams

I thought I would approach this particular Bootcamp blog about the 2008 RWA conference a bit differently… Don’t get me wrong, I’m thrilled to have taken part and met the amazing and talented ladies (and gentlemen!) of Australia’s romance writing community. I learned more than I had ever thought to achieve in one weekend.

But there is another side to going to an RWA conference…there is the self-actualization side…

Now, that I’ve been there, I can more clearly see myself as an active member, receiving an award, and/or presenting a tutorial! I know, I know…I’m new to all of this and it may take a bit more work to get there, but (as my friend Enisa says), now that I can visualize it, I can work to achieve it-and so can you!

Once a day, remember to close your eyes and picture yourself in the darkened dining hall amidst a group of your friends and colleagues. On the podium the RWA President is smiling, but purposefully avoiding your eyes. She’s expounding on the writing abilities of this years major award winner. The room falls expectantly silent as Madame President’s eyes meet yours. As you hear your name called, your friends jump up, clapping and cheering-for you! On feet of wings you fly your way to the podium. Madame President hugs you, whispering some quick words of support. You’re surprised by the weight of the trophy. You look at the shiny metallic figure, but you’re unable to see your name inscribed on its surface through your haze of tears. Stepping to the microphone you thank God, your country, your family, friends and most of all-the Bootcamp!

If you can visualize it, you can achieve it. Don’t be afraid to dream-and dream big…isn’t that what our writing is all about anyway!

It's no "Secret" visualisation works! Build it and they will come.. I have every confidence that you will achieve it.

Hi Dana,

this is so true.

I honestly don't know whether positive thinking has that magic -- but I do believe that 99% of success is showing up. And if you visualise that goal, and work towards it, you're giving yourself that chance to be there when it matters.

I write this because that fine scenario happened to me this year's conference -- okay, so it was the VPA and not the Emerald, maybe next year ;) -- and it only happened because I looked at that contest way back in April and that little voice inside said, 'yeah, so why can't I? Why shouldn't that winner be me?'

The best thing about the conference for me was being surrounded by all those people who've done what I want to do. To see that they're just people, like me -- why shouldn't I be like them one day?

And AJ, from whose fine new blog I ventured here -- whether you think you can, or think you can't, you're still right ;)

I love it Erica! And congrats on the VPA! And yes, AJ is sooooo right...'if you think you can or you think you can't-you're right!'
