Peddling Poisons and Dealing Drugs

The RWA conference in August is fast approaching and I'll be taking the writers attending my session "Peddling Poisons and Dealing Drugs" on a tour around the pharmacopoeia, focusing on some of the more interesting situations I've encountered in my career.

We'll be talking about common mistakes adults make that result in poisoning (or why you shouldn't store the cough medicine next to the eucalyptus oil), exploring a fictional house to see what good poisons are lying around, and discovering how difficult it can be to successfully poison someone in a book and have your villain get away with it.

Then its on to drugs - ones that make you sleepwalk, ones that help your love life, and ones the drug companies discovered almost by accident. We'll look briefly at the history of drugs and the future of drugs and how to include drugs in your work of fiction.

Then there's the touch table - I'm putting together a few old books, bottles and other bits and pieces to fire the imaginations of everyone in the room.

Two weeks to go. I can hardly wait.

Writing Competitions: Friend or Foe?

Whenever people hear that I sold to Harlequin as a result of a competition win they inevitably ask me my thoughts on competition. I will raise my hand to being a card-carrying competition slut. I love the whole competition mechanism as a way for new writers to expose their work and guage their craft relative to other new writers. I created a factsheet for the recent RWA Romance Roadshow (WA) which you are welcome to download in its fullness, but following is a brief summary of that document for your blogging convenience...

Romance writing comps (there's hundreds!) tend to be structured around the non-negotiable STORY ELEMENTS in the romance genre:
1. Hook First chapter/First page/Opening line. Lots of comps focus on this important tool which is designed to replicate the submission process where all you’ll get is two paragraphs/sixty seconds of an editorial assistant's time
2. First Meeting/First Kiss Sensual Tension. Can you write a H/h in a way that sizzles with tension even if they don’t touch? Not the ‘gasping for a shag’ kind, but the ‘he’s-aware-of-everything-she-does-in-the-room-even-when-he’s-not-watching-her’ kind.
3. Black Moment Emotional punch and conflict. Can you write a scene that is saturated with emotional punch? Not melodrama. Punch. As in ouch... right in the solar plexus.

Competition can be very helpful for:

Learning how to write to deadline: There is nothing as motivating as a looming deadline. A deadline can make you faster and more efficient, more ruthless.

Affordable market-research: Competition feedback can give you an idea of whether your story, characters or voice appeal to readers of the genre.

A foot in the door with an editor/agent: Again, you bypass that poor, overworked editorial assistant trying to read your work on the tube and get straight under the nose of someone with the ability to sign a cheque.

Query credit-history: Briefly mentioning competition successes tells the editor/agent that you're polished and literate and that the story has broad enough appeal to be able to score highly in a range of comp settings - and that matters to them as marketers.
Comps can be very un-helpful for:

An editing tool: excruciatingly slow, confusing and entirely frustrating way to edit your work.

Your ego: You need a tough skin and a really supportive group of writing friends to patch you up after a comp disappointment.

Thoughts on surviving competition:

Competition is enormously subjective. Be prepared to do well sometimes and bomb sometimes, even with the same manuscript.

Approach competitions with balance & detachment. Don’t give them too much importance in the greater scheme of your writing.

Watch your spending. Decide at the beginning of each year how much you are willing to spend on learning to write to deadline, affordable market research, building a query credit-history and possibly skipping the slush pile.. and then stick to it!

Roseanne on a Mission!

It's been some time that Roseanne had done a Mission Report (or Successful Missions as it was called then), due to the changes I have been making on the blog and creating a website. But she is back as you can tell from her postings and being our PR mum, she will boast any good news we have on the blog.

On ya Roseanne!!!

Mission Report - Eleni Konstantine & VP entrants

This post if for the fabulous Eleni Konstantine. Earlier in the year, Eleni came 3rd in specialised category of the Great Expectations of the North Texas Romance Writers of America competition. Her novel was read by Chris Keeler from Dorchester but her full ms wasn't requested. We at bootcamp were thrilled with her placing and know that she will succeed in her writing career. Eleni, you rock.

Alison, Jacqueline, Tracey, Fiona and myself entered the Valarie Parv competition run by RWA Australia this year. Although we didn't final, our scores were very impressive. We will move forward and focus on making our ms the best they can be. And next year, well there could be a few more bootcampers with their novels being requested. Remember Bootcampers Rock.

Mission Report - Alison Leake

This is my first mission report for what seems like forever. But, I'm back and ready to share the success stories of Bootcampers 101 from the rooftops. This group have been together for nearly two years. Two years of support, encouragement, growth, butt kicking (when necessary)and friendship. Okay, I'll start with Alison. What a great few months this writer has had. And she deserves it. Her book, Dear Heart finaled in the FFS Category of the Windy City Four Seasons comp in which she placed, then won. Suprised you didn't hear the screaming. Her prize, the NY Agent has requested her full ms. This book is, rich and lyrical. Alison has woven a great plot around characters as wonderful as any i've read. A few weeks ago Alison delighted us with the news that Dear Heart had finaled in another Contest. This time in the FFS section of the Golden Gladdaugh. The winner will be announced on September 1st. Watch this space.

Romance Writers of Australia conference - coming soon

Next month will be the Romance Writers of Australia annual conference being held in Brisbane. So it's going to be a busy few weeks for those of us going, what with getting organised, and some of us working on pitches. Eeek it's next month. I better get into gear!

And for me personally it's a chance to meet the Bootcampers in person. I am the only one of the group who hasn't met the others (not having been able to get to the conference last year, nor Boot-i-Con). Yes, sad I know. But it will be rectified soon. Happy face!!

Alas, I will not meet everyone (sad face again) and hopefully one day all the 101ers can be in the same room together. That would be so cool. So to those going, looking forward to seeing you at the conference. For those who are not able to make it, I hope you have a great Claytons Conference, and hope to meet you next time. Fingers crossed!!
